Welcome to Wieland Busby Metals, where quality and innovation drive us every day. Today, we are pleased to introduce our AMS 4596-C72900 Toughmet 3® an exceptional Copper Nickel-Tin Bronze alloy designed for performance, durability, and safety. Known for its impressive mechanical wear, stress relaxation, and corrosion resistance, Toughmet 3 C72900 is a premier choice for industries demanding the highest quality materials. What sets apart is its spinodal hardened structure that offers high strength and superior toughness. It is non-magnetic, environmentally friendly, and easy to machine—making it an excellent alternative to beryllium copper.

Reliability Toughmet 3®

The Toughmet 3 alloy program is a long-standing proven product in all markets especially aerospace. Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier to name a few, have all embraced this alloy program mainly due to the fact that the alloy produced by Materion is the only C72900 program which was rigorously tested and certified to the meet the demands of the MMPDS. It is also the only alloy of its kind approved for Safran and Airbus.

Typical Uses

C72900 has carved its niche in a variety of fields, showcasing adaptability and durability. In the aerospace sector, it’s the go-to material for various components such as brakes, landing gear bushings, steering joints, and wing flap bearings. Its unique properties also make it indispensable in the electrical industry, where it is widely used in connectors, relay elements, and switches. Industrial sectors rely on it for springs and wires, and the marine industry opts for it for its exceptional marine components. If you are in the oil and gas sector, you can find C72900 in bearings, valve guide bushing couplings, and other drilling components.

Chemical Composition

Toughmet 3® chemical composition is meticulously designed to meet AMS 4596 standards, making it one of the most reliable materials in the market. Its alloy constituents are primarily Copper, with Nickel and Tin percentages ranging from 14.50-15.50% and 7.50-8.50% respectively. Minute traces of other elements like Iron, Zinc, and Manganese are also present to enhance its properties further. The cumulative sum of these named elements amounts to a minimum of 99.5%.

Machinability

Machining C72900 is a straightforward process, thanks to its excellent machinability rating. Its density stands at 0.323 lb/in3 or 8.94 g/cm3, making it not just strong but also relatively light, which aids in the machining process.

Mechanical Properties

Adhering to the AMS 4596 standard, the mechanical properties of C72900 are truly extraordinary. It boasts an ultimate tensile strength of up to 132 ksi and a minimum yield strength of 107 ksi. Its Rockwell “C” Hardness is rated at a minimum of 30, confirming its capability to withstand significant mechanical stress without compromising integrity.

Physical Properties

Its physical attributes also contribute to its wide-ranging applications. With a melting point ranging between 1742-2039 °F and a specific gravity of 8.94, its suitability for extreme environments is beyond question. Thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity are optimized for efficient energy transfer, making it a versatile material for various needs.

Fabrication Properties

When it comes to fabrication, C72900 excels in numerous techniques. It is excellent for soldering, brazing, gas-shielded arc welding, and many more. Its capacity for being both cold-worked and hot-formed is notable, offering excellent flexibility in manufacturing processes.

Thermal Properties

Thermal stability is another strong suit of C72900. It has a coefficient of thermal expansion of 9.1 ·10-6 per °F, making it well-suited for applications that require stability under temperature fluctuations.
